From a post by I think it was [info]skibbley, I ordered a Biobulb daylight compact fluorescent to replace my existing not very environmentally friendly, but excellent for lighting incandescent 100W daylight bulb.

The bright Biobulb is both 75W more efficient (i.e. 25W bulb), and an awful lot brighter than the 100W incandescent I was using.. I'm not sure it's a precise replacement (the light is less blue, and I'm not sure the light feels quite the same, either), but it's worth looking into. Once you walk out of a biobulbed room, everywhere else looks rather yellow. Did I mention how *astoundingly bright* it is? It outputs 6500K light if you're looking to colour match.

I also bought a night light for the landing, so I don't have to have the bulb on there all night. It's not quite as environmentally friendly or as bright as the reviews claim (it's 5W, so the claim of 1/2p per day running cost is false based on current prices). However, it is perfect for the task of stumbling to the loo during the night - just don't expect it to be bright enough when your eyes aren't night adjusted or you've been near the incredibly bright Biobulb. I was using the older, dimmer nightlight rather than the new improved bright one, though.
